This is what 5 former community fundraisers had to say

  • Lynda

    Community Leader

quoteI am 55 years old and worked for Greenpeace for 10 months from September 08. Prior to being employed by Greenpeace I was a volunteer here and jumped at the chance of working part time on saving this beautiful planet of ours.
In my role of Community Team Leader I got to meet a variety of people from all walks of life. I loved being able to share the campaigns with them and the successes Greenpeace has achieved.

  • Marcus

    German Backpacker

quoteWhen I arrived in NZ I got in contact with Greenpeace New Zealand and was given the opportunity to support their campaigns around election time. Somehow I managed to kick off pretty well fundraising and managed to bring in quite a lot of new supporters for Greenpeace. People asked me on the street if I studied marketing or if I would search for a better paid job in car sales after I successfully “wrapped them around my finger”! The fact is that I learnt a lot about how to be a salesman about 100 years ago (the very first job I’ve ever had) but honestly I hated it. I couldn’t see the point in selling people stuff which I didn’t like myself. But Greenpeace was different. People said I was a tough salesman … I just knew my subject and believed in it. I ended up doing so well that the coordinators asked me to join the travel team. So I did that for eight months. I’ve seen a lot of sights, surfed many waves, learnt about New Zealand and Maori culture, found friends and good conversations. Certainly working for Greenpeace doesn’t make you a millionaire, but the pay is better than many of the other jobs travellers can do. Plus I was paid to travel around the country! As a visitor to New Zealand, how can you beat that!? I appreciate the opportunity this great organization and especially the great people behind it gave me.

  • Gareth

    Climate Mobilisation Campaigner

quoteI worked as a street fundraiser in both NZ and Australia on and off for 5 years. I started in the Auckland team, and then I was promoted to team leader in Wellington. The thing I loved most about the job was talking to people about issues that I am passionate about. From this experience and through my studies I left and continued working in the environmental field for a few years. Now I’m back at Greenpeace as the Climate Mobilisation Campaigner!
A highlight for me was the opportunity to sail on the Rainbow Warrior as a volunteer deckhand and taking part in actions to stop deep sea bottom trawlers destroying the ocean floor.
If you are an enthusiastic person and are comfortable talking to people of all walks of life, and if you care about a sustainable future….Do it! Apply now! Where else can you get paid to make a real difference to peoples’ lives and be part of an effective global campaigning organization? All you need to do is speak from the heart and let Greenpeace’s years of successful campaigns speak for themselves.

  • Aaryn

    Environmentalist

quoteI worked as a street fundraiser for 3 years over a period of 6 years. After working for a while I got promoted to team leader. I was also part of the Be The Change Tour and a volunteer.
The thing I loved most about this job was talking to people and discussion important issues and the thrill of the chase in getting people to sign up. I also loved being part of positive change. A highlight for me was taking part in various non violent direct actions. My managers were also really supportive.
So if you an outgoing confident person who is passionate about the environment give it a go! Its lots of fun and can help you learn really good communication skills while doing something worthwhile.
Working as a fundraiser for Greenpeace gave me a foot in the door within the green work environment. I am currently a Project Manager at EcoMatters Environmental Trust in West Auckland – working in household sustainability along with being involved in many other green initiatives.

  • Mike

    Fundraising Manager Greenpeace Africa

quoteI have worked for Greenpeace for over 6 years now. I started out as a street fundraiser in Auckland, and then became team leader. After that I went to Australia for a month to learn about fundraising in Oz. During this time I was the acting city coordinator for Perth. When I returned to NZ I became a coordinator. I had been in that role for a year when I was offered a short contract setting up a team in San Francisco, and then Manila. Half way through my contract in Manila Greenpeace International offered me the job of international face-to-face coordinator. I did that for 3 years and then was offered my current job as fundraising manager for Greenpeace Africa.
I loved the people in the team and also the people on the street. I loved meeting so many people who care about what’s going on in the world and who are willing to take action. It’s awesome!
Everyone can do it if you have the right attitude. Go for it! Be confident, seize the day!!

  • Neha

    Relationship Marketing Intern

quoteI started working for Greenpeace as a fundraiser in 2008 after completing my postgraduate studies in marine science. When I started I didn’t expect to work for more than 3 months. But after 6 months I knew Greenpeace is the place I want to be and fundraising was the best job for someone like me to make a difference.
One of the things that kept me in the job for almost two years was the opportunities that helped me feel integrated with other parts of the organisation. I was a team leader for the door to door program as well as an oceans volunteer. And today I am an intern with Greenpeace in relationship marketing.
Fundraising for a long time has taught me so much, changed the way I think, and also shaped what I want to pursue as my future studies and career. Overall Greenpeace is a great place to work for someone who is passionate about the environment and to meet like minded people.
